All the eyes in the horseracing world will be on Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra this weekend, as the two stars will hit the tracks. On one hand, Zenyatta will try to break her unbeaten streak to record heights while she tries to obtain her 17th consecutive victory in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, on Sunday.
Zenyatta shares the record with Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky for the longest winning streak. Thos who attend the Vanity at Hollywood Park will receive a bobblehead of the horse in celebration of her accomplishment. "We're just trying to focus on the Vanity and not on all of her accomplishments," trainer John Shirreffs commented.
On Saturday, Rachel Alexandra will run in the $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs, trying to regain her winning touch. She defeated Zenyatta in the race for the Horse of the Year award with an 8-for-8 record, including victories against male horses in the Preakness Haskell Invitational and Woodward Stakes. However, this season she lost her two starters.
“Rachel Alexandra continues to turn in strong works,” owner Jess Jackson said. “As long as she continues to progress, we intend to race her with the expectation she will obtain her fitness level of last year or better. Our ultimate goal and hope is to enter the Breeders' Cup in November.”
