Japanese horse Delta Blues won the Melbourne Cup, ridden by Yasunari Iwata, in a dramatic finish in which the colt defeated Pop Rock, also trained by Katsuhiko Sumii, by a short head. Delta Blues became the third foreign horse to win the Cup.

Before winning the Melbourne Cup, Delta Blues finished third in the Caulfield Cup, giving a good performance. “I would like to congratulate the owner, and the trainer, and all related staff involved in training such a great horse in Delta Blues,” jockey Iwata said. “Thanks very much for all the support and fantastic atmosphere here at Flemington.”

Maybe Better claimed the third place for the Australian team while Land’N Stars, led by John Egan, took the fifth place. Irish horse Yeats was slow at first but gained ground to finish in seventh place. Jockey Kieren Fallon said about his mount Yeats after the race: “I am disappointed really, he didn't finish off like I thought he would. The race was run pretty much the way I expected it to be.”
